Community Fayre is published four times a year by a group of Wirksworth-based volunteers. It is believed to be Britain's longest-established community newspaper, having been published continuously since 1983.
There's a lot going on in and around Wirksworth, and Community Fayre aims to reflect that in its publications. The paper is dependent on community groups and residents for its source material, and on local businesses, who pay to advertise. Community Fayre began in 1983 as a physical 'fayre' - a meeting of all the community groups that were operating in Wirksworth at the time. Following the event, people thought it would be great to have a method of letting others know what was happening in the town and its surrounding villages. In 2023 - in its 40th year - Community Fayre became formally incorporated as a Community Interest Company (CIC). A CIC is a special type of limited company, which exists to benefit the community rather than private shareholders. It requires a community interest statement explaining what the company does and how it benefits its community, and an asset lock – a legally binding undertaking that its assets will only be used for its social objectives.
The board of Community Fayre CIC is chaired by Andy Jordan, a long-standing member of Wirksworth Town Council and former town mayor. The other directors are Mathias Graf, Margaret Keeling, Ranald Macdonald and Colin Petty – all Wirksworth residents, and all actively involved in producing the paper. |
